Etsy title length: 140 characters, and what to put first
Etsy allows 140 characters in a title. On the search results page buyers see far fewer than that before the title is cut off, and Etsy’s own guidance is to put the clearest description of the item at the start.
The limit and the rules
- 140 characters maximum, including spaces.
- Some characters (such as % : &) are allowed only once, and symbols like $ ^ ~ are not allowed at all.
- Words in all capitals are limited; a title cannot be shouted.
- Titles must describe the item. A keyword list with no readable product name can be flagged.
What buyers actually see
A search result card shows roughly the first 40 to 50 characters on desktop, and fewer on the app, before the title is cut. Put the product name with its key phrase there. The rest of the title is for the phrases that help Etsy match more searches.
A structure that works
- 1Product phrase first: “Linen Table Runner”.
- 2Then the qualifier buyers search: “Farmhouse Table Decor”.
- 3Then occasion or recipient: “Thanksgiving Table, Housewarming Gift”.
- 4Stop when it reads well. Filling all 140 characters is not the goal.
Example: “Linen Table Runner, Farmhouse Table Decor, Rustic Natural Linen, Thanksgiving Table, Housewarming Gift”. 104 characters, five phrases, readable.
Fixing titles across a shop
Adding a brand or a phrase to every title, or replacing a season, is a bulk edit: add text before or after, or find and replace, across the selected listings. A good tool checks every result against the 140-character limit before publishing.
Questions
- Is a longer title better on Etsy?
- Not by itself. Etsy matches phrases, not length, and a title that is a natural product name with a few phrases performs at least as well as one stuffed to 140 characters.
- Should the title repeat the tags?
- Overlap is fine and expected. The strongest phrase belongs in both.
- Can I change titles on many listings at once?
- Etsy’s own editor does not do find and replace in titles. A syncing bulk editor does.
